The Velvet Underground - It's Just Too Much!
A Guide to Unofficial Velvet Underground Recordings
Welcome! As the subtitle suggests, this is a Web site designed to guide those individuals who wish to examine the deeper realms of the Underground which have so far been left unexplored by the Velvets' official catalog. (You do have all of the Velvet Underground's officially released material, don't you?) For myself, part of the beauty of the unofficial VU catalog lies in the fact that, while there is a considerable amount of material out there to be found, the lack of a complete audio history preserves the mystique that I imagine has brought many into the Velvets' Underground to begin with. Unfortunately, the lack of new finds may be why some of these recordings keep getting re-released over and over again, making it difficult for any completist. This is what I hope to help straighten out here, as well as to determine the best quality releases of the available performances, outtakes, alternate mixes, and etc. by one of history's greatest Rock and Roll bands.
I'm hoping to view this site partially as a community effort where people can feel free to submit reviews or artwork, and be credited where these items are posted. Also, any corrections drawn to my attention will be greatly appreciated. Please visit the Contact Page for more information.
For now there will only be CDs listed on this site. I've decided to omit any bonus CDRs which sometimes come with these CDs, as I imagine they are impossible to find and, from what I can tell, don't have any unique tracks on them (please correct me on this if I'm wrong). Information about these CDRs can be found here. I've also omitted any rip-off CDs which only contain material lifted from the official releases. I may add LPs and other sources in the future should I find the time!
Most data was taken from Olivier Landemaine's absolutely fantastic The Velvet Underground Web Page, the electronic Mecca for VU fans. Some other information was taken from The Velvet Forum, The Rock and Roll Animal Web Page and The Velvet Underground/bootleg reference. No selling or trading of Velvet Underground bootlegs will ever be done through this site.
Thanks for visiting! I hope you find the database useful.
